AG-RMS: configuration, reported performance and field acceptance
The system and reference hardware
AG-RMS is based on customized QGroundControl with a proprietary real-time data bridge and multi-vehicle communications middleware. The profile lists RIEGL VUX-1HA-22 LiDAR at 1.8 million points/s, Trimble AP+60 Land, FLIR Ladybug 5+ at 30 megapixels, and DJI M350 RTK. The described field workflow runs over an encrypted in-vehicle LAN without internet access.
Keep each performance measure attached to its meaning
The profile reports <200 ms synchronization, absolute positioning accuracy ≤2 cm, elevation ≤3 cm, point-cloud density >2000 points/m² and air–ground work rate >20 km/day. These measure different aspects of the system and need separate field checks.
Interpret the comparison claims precisely
The profile states 100% single-pass coverage, a 10× comparison with traditional surveying and 80% shorter duration. It does not provide the coverage denominator or comparative baseline. The 10× and 80% figures are separate claims, not equivalent calculations. A trial should define required surfaces, route, crew, setup and data-delivery scope.
Define the required surfaces
Coverage only has meaning against a specified area or set of surfaces. Agree which assets, sides and occluded areas are in scope, and how missing observations will be recorded.
Separate coverage from accuracy
A visually complete data set may still fail an accuracy requirement. Plan independent reference checks alongside the coverage review and keep the two results distinct.
Test the actual field workflow
Review how teams exchange coverage information, handle connectivity limits and assign recapture. Include the time needed for setup and data transfer when comparing workflows.
Review the whole mobilization
A pilot should record why recapture was required and what it cost. Evaluate the proposed workflow against that evidence. Do not infer guaranteed savings from a conceptual diagram or a single successful field run.
Start with the deliverable, not the sensor stack
Define the required geospatial product, coordinate reference, surfaces, completeness and accuracy before selecting acceptance metrics. Sensor specifications are inputs to the system, not delivered map accuracy.
Use independent control and checkpoints
Separate observations used to calibrate or process the dataset from checkpoints used to validate the result. Define the statistical reporting method before collection so the acceptance test cannot be selected after seeing the data.
Record the processing chain and handover evidence
Keep the platform, sensors, calibration status, time synchronization, trajectory/positioning configuration and relevant processing versions with the project record. Agree which coverage graphics, checkpoint results, exceptions and metadata are required at handover.
